City of Toronto urges residents to be prepared for emergencies 

An emergency can happen anytime and anywhere. The City of Toronto's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is encouraging all residents to learn more about becoming emergency ready during Emergency Preparedness Week, May 5 to 11.

"It's important for residents to be prepared to deal with any emergency situation that may arise," said Councillor Jaye Robinson (Ward 25 Don Valley West), Chair of the Community Development and Recreation Committee. "Whether it's a power outage, a flood or any other emergency, it's critical that everyone has a plan and a three-day kit with food, water and supplies to help them cope better during an emergency."  

The Office of Emergency Management also reminds everyone that it is important to have homeowner and tenant insurance to help protect themselves and their families.

Emergency Preparedness Week is a joint municipal, federal and provincial effort to make the public more aware of individual preparedness and aware of how people can reduce risks and consequences in the case of an emergency. The campaign's focus this year is on ensuring that seniors and other older adults are getting the message about being prepared. 

The OEM's web page at provides tips about being prepared for an emergency - including how to create an emergency preparedness kit for residents and their families. The website includes planning information for individuals including seniors and older adults who have special needs.
