51 Division starts anti-violence campaign

51 Division starts anti-violence campaign

Tuesday, June 6, 2017 - 8:47 AM
51 Division:  416-808-5100

The Toronto Police Service 51 Division has started an anti-violence campaign in co-operation with the Church-Wellesley BIA.

The campaign features posters that say, "Hate is a Crime, Being Human Isn't" and postcards that indicate how to contact police in a variety of ways. These have been distributed throughout the Church-Wellesley area. Social media is being used to further advance the message.

51 Division Detective Henry Dyck notes that, "In 2016, LGBT people faced more hate crime assaults than any other identified group. As we enter PRIDE month, a time when trans people are often targeted for abuse, we want everyone to know that hate is unacceptable, and encourage the community to report it.”

Unit Commander A/Superintendent Steven Molyneaux adds, “The LGBT community is a large and important part of the cultural mosaic of 51 Division, and the Toronto Police Service believes everyone has the right to live in a safe, violence-free environment."

The campaign is now up and running. People encountering hate crime are being encouraged via this campaign to "Stop It, Report It."

Anyone who is a victim or witness to a hate crime is asked to contact police at 416-808-5100, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).
