The Toronto Police Service Hold Up Squad would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a robbery investigation.
On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, officers responded to a robbery call in the Wilson Avenue and Dufferin Street area.
It is alleged that:
- a man entered a bank and made several unsuccessful attempts to withdraw cash from the Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
- the man then approached a teller and made a demand for cash while gesturing toward his waistband indicating that he had a firearm
- no firearm was observed during the incident
- the man obtained a quantity of cash before fleeing the bank
Several hours later on the same date, officers responded to a robbery call in the Yonge Street & Carlton Street area.
It is further alleged that:
- a man entered a pharmacy and selected an item for sale
- the man approached the checkout counter while holding his hand in his jacket pocket indicating that he had a firearm
- no firearm was observed during the incident
- the man made a demand for cash but the employee was unable to open the register
- another employee approached and the man fled the store empty-handed
On Thursday, December 1, 2022, officers observed a man matching the suspect description, commenced an investigation, and took him into custody.
It is further alleged that:
- at the time of arrest, officers recovered the bank card used at the ATM during the bank robbery
Zakerie Ali, 27, of Toronto, was charged with:
- two counts of Robbery.
He was scheduled to appear in court for a Bail Hearing on Friday, December 2, 2022, at 10:00 am at the College Park Court, 444 Yonge Street, Room 507.
