To celebrate the War of 1812, the Market Gallery and Market Kitchen will be holding two special events on Saturday, June 16 and Saturday, June 23, from noon to 3 p.m. The events will provide residents with the opportunity to sample what life was like during the 1800s.
Event activities include:
• Cooking demonstration, using authentic historical recipes from the 1800s.
• Historical children's games and colouring sheets
• Discovery hunt, using clues to locate historical plaques in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood, related to the 1812-15 era
• Historical talk and tour of the Market Gallery's current exhibit, "Finding the Fallen: The Battle of York Remembered." The exhibition identifies the Canadian, British, First Nations and American combatants who died in the battle on April 27, 1813. Their names are recorded in a newly commissioned Book of Remembrance and their sacrifices are brought to life through artifacts, custom-designed maps and first-person accounts.
All activities are free but a donation of $2 is suggested for admission to the Market Gallery.
These events are part of the more than 100 inspiring bicentennial commemorative events to be staged in Toronto as part of the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration in 2012 and 2013. More information is available at http://www.toronto.ca/1812.
