A 23-year-old man is being charged with one count of First Degree Murder and six counts of attempted murder in connection with the shooting at the Toronto Eaton Centre.
D/Sgt. Brian Borg speaks to media:
Christopher Husbands, of Toronto, turned himself into police at 2:30 a.m. on Monday, along with his lawyer.
He had been under house arrest on conditions not to be outside of his residence. Ahmed Hassan, 24, was killed at the scene of the Saturday evening shooting that that saw six others wounded.
A 23-year-old man remains in the hospital with multiple gunshot injuries to the neck and chest. His condition remains critical. The remaining hospitalized victim, a 13-year-old boy, who was shot in the head, continues to improve. His condition is described as serious but stable.
“I am extremely happy to report that he and his family are doing very well, given all that they have endured,” lead investigator D/Sgt. Brian Borg said, flanked by Acting Deputy Chief Jeff McGuire and Mayor Rob Ford.
Borg emphasized that the arrest does not change the need for the public to come forward with more information.
“I want to emphasize, before going any further, that regardless of a quick arrest that by no means is the investigation into the tragic events of last Saturday evening concluded,” Borg said.
“It is therefore extremely important that anyone who has not yet come forward who has any information to not make the mistake or assumption that your information is not important… Your information remains as important now as it did prior to this arrest being made.”

Borg said the shooting was not a random act of violence.
“Even though there are several persons who have now been identified in this case as being known gang members, or who have gang associations, I do not believe this to be a gang-motivated shooting,” said Borg, who would not discuss the motive so as not to compromise the investigation.
He thanked the investigative and support team from across the Service for bringing the investigation to an arrest.
“As well to say to those directly affected by this incident, the people of Toronto and to everyone concerned, I hope that this arrest brings a sense of relief and assurance that the person I believe to be responsible has been apprehended and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
