#DontGetScammed is a new, yearlong public education campaign, aimed at helping the people of Toronto protect themselves against fraud and scams.

Watch a new video about a known fraud on the first Friday of every month in 2023. Each #DontGetScammed video will provide an overview of the scam and highlight the red flags to watch out for so you can recognize a fraud.

Led by the Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes Unit, this public education campaign will also raise awareness about common scams and give the public tools to better protect themselves so they don’t become a victim.

“The #DontGetScammed public education campaign will help increase awareness for financial crimes, and assist vulnerable members of our community and ultimately prevent further victimization. The updated fraud webpage is a great resource for individuals looking for more information about financial crimes and how to report a fraud,” said Toronto Police Inspector Paul Rinkoff, Unit Commander of the Financial Crimes Unit.

The people committing these crimes are often professional scammers who will use a variety of tactics to get their hands on your money. Often the fraudsters will be manipulative by taking advantage of your good nature, emotions and your vulnerabilities. The Grandparent Scam is the first #DontGetScammed video in the series.

Watch the #DontGetScammed videos on Toronto Police’s official YouTube and social media channels.

A newly updated fraud webpage is now live and easy to navigate to find key information about reporting a fraud, trusted resources, scam information and prevention tips. Visit tps.ca/fraud for details.
