Nominate a local hero. They are being sought by the St. Lawrence Neighbourhoood Community Recreation Centre (SLCRC) Advisory Committee and the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Assoc. (SLNA) to receive the newly created P.J. Nicholson Award for Community Inspiration. Nicholson was an early St. Lawrence Neighbourhood activist and president of SLNA. He led a team of volunteers in a long-term struggle to get the city to build a rec centre. The neighbourhood, which was re-established in 1979, finally got its rec centre built by the city (albeit without drinking fountains) as a direct result of Nicholson’s drive to garner hundreds of signatures. It opened in 1992. Residents and former residents of the SLNA area are asked to nominate young persons now between the ages of 21 and 30 who, through the SLCRC, made a positive impact in the community. Their names will be engraved on a plaque in the rec centre lobby. The awards will be made by Coun. Pam McConnell Sept. 22 at a special event marking the SLCRC’s 20th anniversary. Email your nomination and explanatory information about why the candidate deserves an award by Aug. 14 to pjaward@thebulletin.ca and it will be forwarded to the appropriate committee. |
