Torontonians surrender over 2,700 guns through Gun Buyback Program

Torontonians surrender over 2,700 guns through Gun Buyback Program

Saturday, May 18, 2019 - 7:00 AM
Corporate Communications:  416-808-7100

The Toronto Police Service received more than 2,700 unwanted guns from Toronto residents from April 26 to May 17, 2019.

Over the three-week Gun Buyback Program, police collected over 1,900 long guns and over 800 handguns for destruction. It is the largest number of firearms collected through a gun buyback program in Toronto.

Chief Mark Saunders and Mayor John Tory noted the three-week program is one of the many measures that can contribute to community safety in Toronto.

"We are pleased with the participation of Torontonians taking steps to safely dispose of unwanted guns in their homes. These guns can present a potential danger if they fall into the wrong hands," said Chief Mark Saunders said. "Removing access to these guns, many of which are not securely stored, contributes to community safety.”

"Gun violence remains a serious concern for both the community and law enforcement. We know ending gun violence will take a variety of measures – there is no one magic answer," said Mayor John Tory. "Every gun surrendered is one less gun in our community and one less gun potentially available to people who want to cause problems in our city."

In July 2018, Toronto City Council adopted the Immediate Steps to Address Gun Violence report, which included a Council decision to establish a gun buyback program. The City of Toronto funded the program with unanimous approval from City Council.

Under the Gun Buyback Program, Toronto residents were able to request police pick up a registered or unregistered gun from their home for destruction for compensation amounting to $200 for long guns and $350 for handguns. Residents who turned over guns to police for destruction would not face charges for possessing or unsafely storing a firearm.

Gun Buyback Program, April 26 to May 17, 2019, Toronto residents compensated for ridding homes of guns

Friday, April 26, 2019 - 10:45 AM
Office of the Chief:  416-808-8000

The Toronto Police Service is buying back unwanted guns from Toronto residents from April 26 to May 17, 2019.

The buyback program helps Torontonians keep their city safe by having police pick up unwanted guns that have been inherited or are no longer used and often stored unsafely.

In July 2018, Toronto City Council adopted the Immediate Steps to Address Gun Violence report, which included a Council decision to establish a gun buyback program. The City of Toronto is funding this program.

Any Toronto resident who wishes to have police pick up a registered or unregistered gun from their home for destruction will be compensated with $200 for a long gun and $350 for a handgun. Residents who turn over guns to police for destruction will not face a charge for possessing or unsafely storing a firearm.

Residents should not bring guns to a police station or City facility.

To participate, call the Toronto Police Service non-emergency line at 416-808-2222 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and an officer will visit your home to pick up the gun.

For more information, visit tps.on.ca/buyback.

Chief Mark Saunders and Mayor John Tory launched the three-week program at Toronto Police Service Headquarters on April 26, 2019.

"This is a great opportunity for Torontonians to get rid of unwanted guns from their homes that present a potential danger if they fall into the wrong hands,"
Chief Mark Saunders said. "These guns can be stolen in a break and enter and sold on the streets."

"Gun violence remains a serious concern for both the community and law enforcement. We know ending gun violence will take a variety of measures – there is no one magic answer," said Mayor John Tory. "Every gun surrendered is one less gun in our community. One less gun potentially available to people who want to cause mayhem in our city."

Monday, February 18, 2019 - 9:05 AM
51 Division:  416-808-5100

The Toronto Police Service is warning members of the public that the arrival of extreme cold temperatures, and vehicles left unattended and warming up in driveways, has resulted in an increase number of vehicle thefts reported in and around the downtown core.

Reported cases have occurred in the area bounded by Dundas Street to the north, Lake Shore Boulevard to the south, Sherbourne Street to the east, and Bond Street to the west.

The convenience of a warm vehicle is not worth the risk of having it stolen. Police are strongly advising members of the public not to leave their vehicles unattended and running at any time.

Rolling overnight lane closures on Lake Shore Boulevard East

News Release:  February 14, 2019

Rolling overnight lane closures on Lake Shore Boulevard East as first step of Gardiner Expressway strategic rehabilitation

From February 19 to March 7, the westbound lanes of Lake Shore Boulevard East between Cherry and Jarvis Streets will have intermittent overnight rolling lane closures, to allow crews to install access platforms for forthcoming work on the underside of the Gardiner Expressway.

At least one westbound lane will always remain open to reduce the impact on traffic. The intermittent 15-minute rolling lane closures will occur hourly, overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., except for Friday and Saturday nights. On February 25 and 26 and March 4 and 5, one full lane will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., instead of the rolling closures.

While the lane closures are in effect, signs will be posted to support the safe travel of all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

After March 7, further lane closures will be required on Lake Shore Boulevard East between Cherry and Jarvis Streets, so crews can continue to access platforms on the underside of the Gardiner Expressway and conduct other repairs. A series of lane closures is anticipated to continue until December and may take place during the day and/or overnight. The details, timing and impact of this work will be communicated in advance.

The section of the Gardiner Expressway between Jarvis and Cherry Streets is nearing the end of its service life and is the number one priority in the City of Toronto's Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan, which addresses the immediate and long-term rehabilitation needs of the expressway to ensure it remains in a safe and operable condition.

The first phase of major rehabilitation work on the eastern Gardiner Expressway will begin this summer and the project is expected to be completed by early 2021. The work will replace the entire concrete deck and steel girders of the expressway between Jarvis and Cherry Streets, replace the eastbound on-ramp at Jarvis Street and the westbound off-ramp at Sherbourne Street, rehabilitate the westbound off-ramp leading to Yonge, Bay and York Streets, as well as make other improvements. The City will provide more details on this work in the spring.

More information about this project and the rolling lane closures is available at
