==========================================

News Release:  March 9, 2016

City of Toronto cautions residents about responding to misleading communications – Toronto Water does not conduct door-to-door sales

The City of Toronto is receiving complaints from residents who are being given notices such as flyers from independent contractors using door-to-door sales tactics. The notices are designed to appear as if they are City communications about programs and services associated with Toronto Water.

Toronto Water does not conduct door-to-door sales of any kind and does not sell, partner with or endorse any products or services. The public should be wary of any companies offering health-based testing of Toronto's drinking-water quality or claiming to be working on behalf of the City, or notices saying mandatory City programs require the purchase of services or equipment.

Residents are also advised to exercise caution when solicited for any service and when sharing personal information with people unknown to them. Elderly people are often most at risk for these kinds of solicitations. Anyone suspecting fraud should call the Toronto Police Service at 416-808-2222 or the Ministry of Consumer Services at 416-326-8800.

Residents who have a concern or question about Toronto Water's programs and services can call 311 or visithttp://www.toronto.ca/water. Residents can also submit certain kinds of water-related service requests online at http://bit.ly/1rUMhZe.

Public Safety Alert, Canada Revenue Agency scam

Public Safety Alert, Canada Revenue Agency scam

Thursday, March 3, 2016 - 3:06 PM
Financial Crimes:  416-808-7300

Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes is reminding the public of the continuing "CRA Scam." Victims are being contacted via phone or e-mail by persons claiming to be Canada Revenue Agency employees. The victims are being advised they owe money to the Canada Revenue Agency, and payment is demanded. Immediate arrest is threatened if the demand is not made.

Victims often believe the calls are authentic, based in part, on call-display information suggesting the caller is calling from a police phone number, or number associated to a government agency.

Police would like to remind members of the public of the following:- phone numbers visible on call display are easily "spoofed" and can never be relied upon to be authentic
- Canada Revenue Agency employees are not peace officers, and have no authority to arrest or to obtain arrest warrants
- police never collect payment on behalf of the Canada Revenue Agency
- Canada Revenue Agency employees will never show up at your door to collect or demand payment
- Canada Revenue Agency employees will not demand payment to be made via money transfer services such as Western Union, MoneyGram, or others. Canada Revenue Agency will not demand taxpayers attend any store to purchase prepaid credit cards as a method of payment.

In order to determine if you have any outstanding matters with the Canada Revenue Agency, please visit the following website:

www.cra-arc.gc.ca

People who have suffered financial losses through the CRA scam are urged to report the matter to their local police service. People who have been only been contacted by "CRA scammers" are urged to report the matter to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center at # 1-888-495-8501, or online at www.antifraudcentre.ca.

New feature on Toronto Police Service website, Calls For Service Portal

New feature on Toronto Police Service website, Calls For Service Portal

Thursday, March 3, 2016 - 1:16 PM
Corporate Communications:  416-808-7100

In an effort to better inform the public, the Service is expanding access to police data.

The newest addition, released today, the Calls For Service portal, allows the public to see where police have responded.

The map, updated every few minutes, shows the approximate location (nearest streets or intersections), event type (such as a hazard or robbery), and the time officers were on scene. The map will not disclose events such as medical calls, sexual assaults, suicides or domestic disputes, to protect the privacy of those involved.

Chief Mark Saunders said the portal will help engage the public. “This another way to help inform the media and public of the work that we do. We are trying to achieve a balance between informing the community of public safety issues and protecting privacy."

Media Relations Officers supplement the information through the @TPSOperations Twitter account and are available, as a resource for the media, from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. every day.

TPS Community Safety Command Deputy Chief Mike Federico said the public plays a key role in the safety of Toronto. “An informed public can help the police prevent and solve crime,” Federico said, noting that police officers always rely on the trust and cooperation of the public to do their work.

The public can also access the Maps & Data web portal that provides a weekly snapshot of crimes throughout the city, which has been available since Fall 2015.

One of Toronto’s finest is preparing to chop his locks at the launch event for the 20th annual Cops for Cancer at Yorkdale Shopping Centre. Torontonians are encouraged to sponsor participants who are signing up for the official head-shave fundraiser, which will take place on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Participating members of the Toronto Police Service, Canadian Cancer Society representatives and cancer survivors will be on hand to answer questions from media and the public and encourage participants to sign up for the cause.

Constable Radoslaw Figlarz from 32 Division will kick-start the fundraising with the first head-shave completed by Toronto city councillor Norm Kelly. Cancer survivor Jordan Walker, security officer at Yorkdale, will share her story on her battle and triumph over osteosarcoma after being diagnosed at 15 years old. The Canadian Cancer Society will also be inviting the top 10 fundraisers from 2015 to recognize their achievement and invite them to participate in this year’s event.

“We are so appreciative of the dedicated volunteers and fundraisers, including Yorkdale Shopping Centre and the Toronto Police Service, who help make Cops for Cancer a success every year,” said Susan Drodge, director of corporate and community partnerships at the Canadian Cancer Society.

Then, on Saturday April 16, 2016, the Toronto Police Service and other bold supporters will pick up their clippers to combat cancer at the annual Cops for Cancer event at Yorkdale Shopping Centre. Last year, the event at Yorkdale raised more than $103,000 to reach the $1 million milestone to support cancer research. The 2016 goal is to raise $100,000 to continue the momentum towards the next million.

Torontonians can sign up at the event or at cancer.ca/CopsForCancerToronto .
