Youth In Policing Initiative - 2015 Summer Jobs!

Did you miss the info session last night for the YIPI summer job? Come to the next information session on January 26, 2015: http://t.co/2TVz6HMuJW, http://t.co/CUIcUPlJlw

2015 is the fifth year of Tokens4Change - February 6, 2015

Tokens 4 Change raises funds for Youth Without Shelter, a shelter in Etobicoke that gives a home to 1,000 homeless youth a year.
Tokens 4 Change is focused on youth acting for youth. Throughout the year, we run workshops in high schools based on the themes of homelessness. We bring in professional artists and encourage the students to build art in various forms that they then present to the public…art installations, street art, music, choreography, performance art and much more.
Then on one day in February, all the schools take to the streets! They can be found at TTC stations all across the city where they collect donations (either tokens or cash) from commuters. At some of the stations the students perform live.

In addition to art installations and performances in subway stations, within the PATH system and at office locations, students will perform on Friday, February 6th in a 12:30 pm arts showcase at the Tangerine Downtown Toronto Cafe, where the KiSS 92.5 Street Team will be on location.
2015 is the fifth year of Tokens4Change.
Watch for the T4C canvassers and performers throughout the city on Friday, February 6, 2015.
On Friday February 7, 2014, over 450 volunteers came together and raised over $79,000 for Youth Without Shelter.
In 2011 the event involved 250 volunteers and raised over $30,000. In 2012 we had 400 volunteers and raised almost $75,000. In 2013 we had 400 volunteers and raised an incredible $90,000 in cash for the shelter.
Tokens 4 Change accepts donations for Youth Without Shelter throughout the year. Please click here to donate. To see photos/videos from past T4C events and stay updated on T4C news, check out Tokens4Change on social media: Facebook, Twitter,YouTube, and Instagram.

Extreme Cold Weather Alert – seek shelter, check on loved ones

City of Toronto Media Relations has issued the following:
==========================================

News Release

January 20, 2015

Extreme Cold Weather Alert – seek shelter, check on loved ones

Dr. David McKeown, Toronto's Medical Officer of Health, has issued an Extreme Cold Weather Alert today for Toronto that will be in effect until further notice.

Exposure to cold weather can be harmful to your health. Hypothermia occurs when the body's core temperature drops below 35°C and can have severe consequences, including organ failure and death. Frostnip and frostbite can also occur in cold weather when skin freezes.

During extreme cold weather, residents are encouraged to call or visit vulnerable friends, neighbours and family to ensure they are not experiencing any difficulties related to the weather. Those most at risk of cold-related illness are people who work outdoors, people with a pre-existing heart conditions or respiratory illness, those taking certain medications, infants and young children, and those who are homeless. People with heart problems can experience worsening of their condition up to several days after cold weather occurs.

This alert triggers cold weather services for homeless people, including two 24-hour drop-ins, additional shelter beds, TTC tokens for people to get to shelter, increased street outreach, and a direction to shelters to relax any service restrictions in place.

During an Extreme Cold Weather Alert, members of the public are encouraged to take the following precautions;
• Dress in layers, making sure your outer layer is windproof, and cover exposed skin.
• Wear a hat, warm mittens or gloves, and warm boots.
• Stay dry. Your risk of hypothermia is much greater if you are wet.
• Choose wool or synthetic fabrics for your clothes instead of cotton, because cotton stops keeping you warm once it gets wet.
• Seek shelter if you normally spend long periods outside. Depending on the wind chill, exposed skin can freeze in minutes.
• Avoid alcohol as it increases blood flow. You may feel warm even though you are losing body heat.
• Consider rescheduling outdoor activities, or limiting time outdoors, especially if it's windy.
• Heat your home to at least 21ÂşC if babies or elderly people are present.

If you see someone on the street that needs outreach assistance – which may include a shelter bed due to the cold temperatures – call 311. For medical emergencies, call 911.

Toronto Crime Stoppers kicks off Crime Stoppers Month with new creative campaigns

Friday, January 9, 2015 - 12:01 PM
Crime Stoppers:  416-808-7260

On January 9, 2015, Toronto Crime Stoppers kicked off Crime Stoppers Month in partnership with the Toronto Police Service and creative agency DDB Canada, Toronto.

This year, Toronto Crime Stoppers will be launching several awareness campaigns highlighting issues relevant to today's young people.

After drug-related deaths in the summer of 2014, Toronto Crime Stoppers - with the expertise of DDB Canada, Toronto - created the "Cookin' With Molly" campaign. This poster and video series raises awareness around the dangers of taking illicit drugs, particularly from unknown sources.

To view #CookinWithMolly click here.

Given several incidents of school violence over the last year, Toronto Crime Stoppers is also revisiting its school campaign. Again in partnership with DDB Canada, Toronto, a new and innovative Student Crime Stoppers program will be launched in the spring.

Toronto Crime Stoppers, celebrating its 31st year, is still the largest program of its kind in Canada and is respected internationally for its programs and awareness campaigns. Crime Stoppers Month, recognized around the world, is an opportunity for programs to launch new initiatives and applaud its partners in the media, police and community, including corporate sponsors.

Crime Stoppers is a partnership of the public, police and media that provides the community with an anonymous way of assisting police with solving crime and improving a neighbourhood's quality of life. Identities will never be revealed, tipsters will never have to go to court and information may result in cash rewards of up to $2,000.

City of Toronto activates additional services, advises homeless people to seek shelter

The City of Toronto is activating additional services in response to an Extreme Cold Weather Alert expected to be issued by Toronto Public Health tomorrow morning.

Additional homelessness services have been triggered. These include:
- Two 24-hour extreme cold weather alert drop-ins will be opened this evening.
- Shelters have been directed to relax any service restrictions they may have.
- Street outreach and transportation services are being increased, with the focus on informing clients about the  danger of weather conditions and transporting them to indoor locations.
- More than 100 organizations and agencies that work with homeless people are advised to prepare for increased service demands.
- Transit tokens are being made available in many drop-ins so people can reach shelters.
- Additional shelter spaces have been opened for men and women.

How to get an emergency shelter bed any day, any hour:
- Call 311, or directly contact the City of Toronto's Central Intake line at 416-338-4766. Within the Greater Toronto Area, it is toll-free at 1-877-338-3398.
- Go in person to the Streets to Homes Assessment and Referral Centre, located at 129 Peter St. (at Richmond Street).

The Streets to Homes Assessment and Referral Centre is always open and has 24-hour street respite for those who do not want a shelter bed, or for whom one is not immediately available. As well as walk-in access to shelter beds throughout the system, the facility provides housing workers Monday to Friday to assist street-involved people to find permanent housing and operates a 40-bed transition to housing shelter program.

If you see someone whom you think requires street outreach assistance, call 311. Note that 311 is not an emergency number. In an emergency, dial 911.

Toronto Police Service
News Release

Has your vehicle been towed?

Monday, January 5, 2015 - 6:58 AM
Corporate Communications:  416-808-7100

On Monday, January 5, 2015 at 7 a.m., the Toronto Police Service will begin a zero-tolerance rush-hour-route initiative. If your vehicle is impounded as a result of this initiative, please follow the steps below to locate and retrieve your vehicle:

Is your car missing? Have you been towed?
If your car is not where you last parked it, it doesn't mean it has been stolen. Vehicles are impounded and relocated for various reasons. If your car has been moved, follow these steps:

1) Call the Toronto Police Service non-emergency line at 416-808-2222, press 4, then press 2, which will put you in contact with the communications dispatcher.

2) Please have the correct vehicle licence plate number and your vehicle's last known location available.

3) The dispatcher will advise you if your car has been impounded or relocated, as well as the vehicle's current location.

Once you have determined that your vehicle has been impounded, call the appropriate towing company immediately, to make arrangements to retrieve it. Remember that storage fees continue to accrue, so attend the impound facility as quickly as possible.

The storage day is 24 hours from the time the vehicle arrives at the pound. Twenty-five per cent of the 24-hour storage fee is chargeable for each of the first four hours, which shall include any part of an hour. One hour is payable as soon as the vehicle arrives at the pound.

The hourly rate and minimum rate will reapply at the conclusion of each 24-hour period.
