Man, 28, arrested in Sexual Assault Investigation, Parliament Street and Mill Street area

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a Sexual Assault investigation.

On Friday, May 26, 2017, at approximately 5:20 p.m., police responded to a radio call in the Parliament Street and Mill Street area.

It is alleged that:

- an 18-year old woman was attacked and sexually assaulted by a man

- the woman was able to fight off her attacker and make her escape

- the man was arrested at the scene

Riaz Ijaz, 28, of Toronto, was arrested. He is charged with:

1) Sexual Assault 
2) Threatening Death

He was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Saturday, May 27, 2017.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of stolen medication.

It was reported that:

- between Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 21, 2017, at 1:15 p.m., a large quantity of medication was stolen from a drug store in the Jarvis Street and Dundas Street East area

The medication includes:

- Hydromorph Contin (12 mg capsules)
- Morphine (60 mg, 30 mg & 5 mg tablets)
- Oxycocet (tablets)
- Oxycodone (5 mg tablets)
- Concerta (27 mg, 36 mg & 54 mg tablets)
- Adderall XL (20 mg capsules)
- Methylphenidate (10 mg tablets)
- Tylenol 3 (tablets)
- Tylenol 2 (tablets)
- Tylenol 1 (tablets)
- Lorazepam (1 mg tablets)
- Clonazepam (0.5 mg tablets)
- Alprazolam (0.25 mg tablets)
- Clobazam (10 mg tablets)

The pills/capsules could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.

5 on 5 youth vs. Metro Toronto Police Basketball Tournament - July 9, 2017

The Esplanade Youth Movement is proud to present the 5 on 5 youth vs. Metro Toronto Police Basketball Tournament at the Esplanade Basketball Court on The Esplanade between Princess St. & Hahn Pl. on July 9 2017.

This event is in partnership with Toronto Police (51 Division) and is aimed to create unity between youth and Toronto Police.

The tournament will be happening on July 9 2017 between 12:00pm to 8:00pm (On the Esplanade between Hahn Place and Princess Street). This Tournament will bring together members of our community and local business to enjoy, educate and build bridges between the youth and the Metro Toronto Police. This is a much needed event in our community and it also allows us to remember the youths we have lost and the Officers in the line of duty.

The Esplanade youth Movement is an organization that works to help assist and educate the community on the struggles and challenges the youth face by raising awareness in the community through workshops and community events.  By focusing on preventing youth-on-youth violence by involving members through educational workshops and free community programs and by creating awareness in the surrounding community. We encourage our members to participate in the planning and execution of our events.  Previous events hosted by the Esplanade Youth Movement have brought together over 400 youths from the surrounding community. There will be a free community barbeque, fire trucks, 50/50 draw, prizes, police horses, youth organizations, and giveaways.

Michael Teddy Gibson, 30, of Toronto, is wanted for First-Degree Murder in the shooting death of Julian Weekes, 27.

On Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 2:03 a.m., officers came across Weekes lying on the sidewalk, nearParliament Street and Richmond Street East. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Gibson was last seen in the Toronto area on April 5, 2016 and may have fled the country.

At the end of April 2017, Gibson was arrested in Aruba by Aruban police. He is currently being investigated for criminal offences in Aruba.

The Toronto Police Service would like to inform the public of an arrest following a police foot chase.

On Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 11:11 p.m., officers were on patrol in the The Esplanade and Scott Streetarea.

It is alleged that:

- officers spotted a man in breach of court conditions

- he went into a crowded restaurant

- officers went to arrest him 

- he struggled violently with the officers

- a loaded .45 calibre semi-automatic firearm was found concealed on him 

Brandon Morgan, 21, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Carry Firearm in a Careless Manner 
2) Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm 
3) Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm 
4) Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized 
5) three counts of Fail to Comply with Recognizance 
6) Fail to Comply with Firearms Prohibition 

He appeared in court at Old City Hall on Sunday, May 7, 2017, 10 a.m., room 101.

On Sunday, May 7, 2017, the 18th annual Ceremony of Remembrance for Ontario's fallen police officers will take place.

All 264 names will be read aloud beginning at 10 a.m., by two recruits representing the latest graduating class of Ontario's finest from the Ontario Police College. Music from the Waterloo Regional Brass Band and songs from members of the Ontario Police Choruses will be performed prior to the arrival of the Procession of Honour.

Police Pipe Bands will lead officers from across Ontario, the United States of America and Europe in their march along Queen’s Park Crescent, arriving at the steps of the Legislature before 11 a.m., for the official start of the annual Ceremony of Remembrance.

Attending the Ceremony will be the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario; the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario; the Honourable Dave Levac, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario; the Honourable Marie-France Lalonde, the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services of Ontario; and the families and friends of the fallen officers.

The Ontario Police Memorial Foundation (OPMF), host of the annual Memorial Service, continues with its research to fulfill its goal of ensuring that every fallen officer from Ontario will not be forgotten.

The architectural illumination of the CN Tower will be done in blue light the evening of May 6 to May 7 to honour police officers in the province of Ontario who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Ontario Police Memorial Foundation will be streaming live on Facebook and Twitter throughout the Ceremony.

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance identifying a man involved in a Sexual Assault investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in the Sherbourne Street and Queen Street East area, at approximately 7:50 p.m., a 24-year-old women boarded a TTC bus.

- the bus was traveling northbound on Sherbourne Street

- a man entered the bus 

- the man sat beside the women

- the man sexually assaulted the women 

- the man then quickly left the bus at the Sherbourne TTC station.

The man is described as late-30s-to-early-40s, black hair. He was wearing a beige-and-blue jacket, tan pants, and carrying a dark backpack.

The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (R.O.P.E.) Squad is requesting the public's assistance locating a federal offender wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for allegedly breaching parole.

Trevor Moore is described as 34, 6'4", 249 lbs., he has a tattoo on the left side of his neck, a full sleeve tattoo on his left arm and a picture of the Devil tattooed on his right upper arm.

He is currently serving a 2 year and 7 month sentence for Possession For The Purpose Of Trafficking a Narcotic and Possession of Property Obtained By Crime.

He is known to frequent the Toronto area. He is considered violent. If he is seen, do not approach, immediately contact police.

On Wednesday, April 26, 2017, shortly after 3 a.m., police responded to 50 Wellesley Street East for a person allegedly climbing a crane in a construction site. 

Subsequently, police and Toronto Fire Services attended and extricated this person from the crane. She was provided medical care in hospital. 

Marisa Lazo, 23, of Toronto, was arrested. She was charged with:

1) six counts of Public Mischief Interfere with Property 

She is scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Thursday, April 27, 2017, 10 a.m.

On Friday, April 21, 2017, a 42-year-old woman attended 51 Division and reported being sexually assaulted in February 2017.

It is alleged that:

- she was invited to the home of a male acquaintance

- she was given several drinks which caused her to become unconscious

- she was sexually assaulted

1) Sexual Assault

He was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Saturday, April 22, 2017, 10 a.m., room 101.

The Toronto Police Service would like to remind drivers about the safe operation of vehicles in and around school zones.

Improving road safety and traffic flow for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists is one of our goals in support of the Service priority and commitment to safe communities and neighbourhoods. 

The need to be aware and alert at all times on any road, and even in the most routine
circumstances, is a key component to moving through traffic safely. This applies to
pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, and transit-users alike. 

We ask those who drive to take extra care on the roads and in parking lots, especially in areas where children and seniors might be present.

Pedestrians/Transit-Users Tips

Parents and caregivers can help reinforce some of these pedestrian-safety messages to children, as well as some of our more vulnerable seniors and transit-users.

- Stop, look, listen and think before entering the roadway
- Utilize crossings at controlled areas, intersections and crosswalks
- Make eye contact with drivers and other road-users
- Wear reflective or bright clothing whenever possible
- Never run onto the roadway
- Do not attempt to cross the road mid-block from between vehicles
- Obey crossing signals and signs
- If present, utilize the school crossing guard, where applicable, to assist you in crossing the road


Driver-Safety Tips 

A driver who is aware and alert can avoid potential hazards and other distractions.

General Driving Tips:

- Scan to identify pedestrians and cyclists entering the road from curbs and driveways or when approaching intersections
- Scan to identify pedestrians attempting to cross the road between vehicles, look for the movement of a pedestrians' feet below the bumper of vehicles 
- Be prepared for the unexpected, avoid using distracting devices
- Leave at least 2-3 seconds following distance between you and vehicles ahead
- In fog, rain, snow or darkness, use your full headlighting system. Remember, when conditions require you to use your windshield wipers, you should turn on your headlights as well
- Use rear-view and outside mirrors often and frequently check your speed

Parking tips for drivers in or near school zones

- Parking vehicles in no-stopping, no-standing or no-parking areas puts children at risk and causes unnecessary traffic congestion
- Use designated drop-off and pick-up areas where available
- For local residents near schools, try walking your child to school. This helps to reduce the congestion of vehicles around the schools and adjoining streets. This helps to reduce the danger to children in or near school zones

It is reported that:

- on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 11 p.m., a woman, 28, tied her dog to a bench outside a fast-food restaurant in the Bloor Street East and Sherbourne Street area

- she returned to find her dog had been stolen

- the dog is a Pomeranian/Shih Tzu, named Kobe

The male suspect is described as 40-50, medium build, brown hair in a ponytail, wearing an orange shirt, blue jeans, and white running shoes.

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in a theft investigation. 

It is reported that:

- On Saturday, February 11, 2017, at approximately 4 p.m., a man and a woman stole a bank deposit bag containing a large quantity of cash from a vendor at the St. Lawrence Market in the Jarvis Street and Front Street East area

- the man and woman then fled in an unknown direction.

The man is described as 40-50, 180 lbs., black short receding hair, wearing light blue or grey denim jeans, and a black jacket with a fur-trimmed hood 

The woman is described as 35-45, brown hair, wearing a black jacket or vest, black shirt or sweater with a white stripe across the chest, pants with a white stripe on the legs, and black boots or shoes.

The Toronto Police Service requests the public’s assistance locating a man wanted in a criminal harassment and assault investigation.

On Thursday, April 6, 2017, at 8:49 p.m., officers responded to a call for a suspicious incident in theSherbourne Street and King Street East area.

It is alleged that:

- in December of 2014, a woman, 25, received unwanted attention from a man she worked with, 

- she told the man she was not interested but he persisted with his behaviour

- between October 2016 and April 2017, he began showing up at the woman's apartment demanding to see her

- on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the man followed the woman's roommate trying to determine the whereabouts of the woman

- he then assaulted the roommate

Police have identified the man as David Bar-On, 30. There is now a warrant issued for his arrest.

He is described as 5’10”, 160 lbs., with spiked brown hair and wearing glasses. He often has a light beard and wears dark clothing.

Police believe he may be dangerous. If located, do not approach. Call 9-1-1 immediately.

The Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes unit is currently investigating a gemstone investment fraud and would like to speak with other potential victims.

It is reported that:

- representatives using the names "Royal Fine Jewels" as well as "Nygard & Associates" contacted people purporting themselves to be in the business of sales and marketing of fine gems and jewelry

- the individuals who were contacted had originally bought gemstones as an investment from a company no longer in business called Global Royalties Limited

- the individuals who were contacted were promised generous returns on their original gemstone investments and began marketing them with these companies

- during the marketing process opportunities for even greater investment returns were offered by either purchasing additional gemstones or trading in what they already owned for more expensive gemstones wanted by prospective buyers

- individuals victimized by these businesses were eventually told a buyer has been found and to sign sales agreements promising sizable returns on their investments to date

- the sales agreements were never fulfilled, and victims were left with gemstones valued at a fraction of what they were purported to be worth 

- victims are unable to contact business representatives because all methods of contact have been disconnected

On Monday, April 3, 2017, TPS Traffic Services will be hosting a "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Session", between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., at 9 Hanna Avenue.

With the official start of spring on Monday, March 20, 2017, motorists will see an increase in motorcyclists on the roads, as spring is the traditional start to the riding season. With the return of the riding season, and the Toronto Police Service's continued focus on road safety for all road users, Traffic Services will be hosting a safety awareness session focusing on motorcycle safety. Subject-matter experts will be on hand to answer questions about motorcycle equipment safety, rider protection and training.

Since 1995, there have been 78 motorcycle fatalities in Toronto. The causal factors of the collisions were analyzed, and the contributing factors to the crashes were identified. Some of the myths and facts are shown below. 

Myth: Young, inexperienced motorcyclists are the most vulnerable, at-risk riders and account for the largest number of victims who die in motorcycle crashes.

Fact: From 1995 to 2017, 18 of the 78 motorcyclists who have died on Toronto roads were under the age of 25. The group with the highest rate of fatality is the 25-39 age group, which comprises 46 of the 78 victims. 

Myth: Those who die in motorcycle crashes are doing something wrong at the time of the incident. Like other drivers, motorcyclists can avoid crashes if they drive properly and within the law.

Fact: Between 1995 and 2017, in 27 of the 78 motorcycle fatalities, the driver of the motorcycle was driving properly at the time.

Other facts relating to the 78 motorcycle fatalities from 1995 to 2017:

- all victims were male
- no pattern of where motorcycle collisions occur most
- most of the fatalities occurred when the weather was dry
- the times of the collisions were varied and a pattern was not apparent

Safe operation, regardless of the type of vehicle, is critical to the safety of all road users. Together, we can make the roads safer by following all the rules.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an ongoing debit-card fraud. These occurrences are not specific to one taxi company. 

There have been multiple occurrences in which a taxi operator has switched debit cards while passing the terminal/PIN pad back and forth during payment. The operator returns a different debit card from the same financial institution. The operator is then in possession of the passenger's debit card and the corresponding PIN. 

The operator's position in a taxi, particularly at night in low light, provides ample opportunity to manipulate cards out of the passenger's sight.

Police would like to warn the public to be vigilant with their debit cards/PIN
information at all times.
