The Toronto Police Service is making the public aware of an arrest made in a Retail Robbery investigation.

Between Friday, October 11 and Friday, October 25, 2024, police responded to four calls in the Carlton Street and Church Street area.

It is alleged that:

• in four separate incidents, the lone male suspect entered retail stores wearing a mask to disguise his identity
• he produced a handgun and made demands for cash
• in first two incidents, he took a quantity of cash before fleeing the store
• in the third incident, he took a set of AirPods
• in the final incident, he fled the store empty-handed

Uniform officers from 51 Division quickly responded to the last robbery where they located the suspect and took him into custody after a short foot pursuit.

It is further alleged that:

• at the time of the arrest, officers recovered a replica handgun

Jad Tannous, 32, of Toronto, was charged with:

1. four counts of Robbery with Firearm
2. four counts of Disguise with Intent
3. four counts of Use Imitation Firearm During Commission of Indictable Offence

He was scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, in room 106.

On Saturday, October 26, 2024, police received a call reporting a Robbery that occurred on Friday, October 25, 2024, in the Carlton Street and Sherbourne Street area.

It is alleged that:

• a lone male suspect entered a retail store wearing a mask to disguise his identity
• he produced a handgun and made demands for cash
• he took a quantity of cash before fleeing the store

Members of the Hold Up Squad commenced an investigation and determined the same suspect, Jad Tannous, committed this robbery. Further charges are expected to follow.

In support of Small Business Week (October 20-26), Staff Superintendent Donald Belanger, alongside representatives from the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Retail Council of Canada, and Workplace Safety and Prevention Services announced the launch of the Ontario Retail Safety and Security Guide to keep businesses in Toronto and across Ontario safe. 

"This Guide will assist businesses in creating safer spaces for both workers and customers, while also helping to reduce the risk of criminal activity," said Staff Superintendent Belanger. "Crime prevention is a shared responsibility, and I am proud of the collaboration that brought this guide to life. Our members look forward to working with local businesses--big and small--offering this practical tool to aid in crime prevention."

The Guide provides practical guidelines and resources to help businesses:

• Be less vulnerable to crime
• Identify and select an appropriate response to address retail crime
• Outline methods to prevent and address the most common and severe forms of retail crime
• Review techniques to address abusive customers, suspicious individuals, intoxicated individuals, as well as individuals experiencing a mental health crisis
• Provide measures to address or prevent violence in the workplace between customers or customers and staff

The Ontario Retail Safety and Security Guide is available online on the Retail Council of Canada website.

The Toronto Police Service is making the public aware of ongoing email scam being reported across Canada. 

How the scam works:

• victims receive an email addressed to them, containing personal information such as their name, phone number, and address
• the email falsely claims the victim has visited a pornographic website and that malware has been installed
• the scammer then threatens to send alleged videos from the victim's phone to their contact list unless a payment in bitcoin is made
• the email warns the victim not to share the message with anyone else
• the scam claims that once payment is made, all alleged videos will be deleted

The Toronto Police Service is advising the public that this is a scam.

The personal information included in the email likely originates from a past data breach. The image of the victim's residence included in the email is taken from Google Maps, not from someone physically visiting the location. At no point was the victim's device compromised.

Tips to protect yourself from this scam:

• be aware of this type of fraud
• if you receive such an email, report it to the police
• do not pay any money; the scammers do not have any compromising videos or images
• if your information has been part of a previous data breach, change your account passwords
• enable multifactor authentication on your accounts for added security

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public's assistance identifying three suspects wanted in an Assault Peace Officer investigation that occurred at a demonstration.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m., police attended a demonstration in the Yonge Street and Front Street East area.

It is alleged that:

• a group of protestors were demonstrating at an event being held at Meridian Hall
• the group attempted to gain entry into the event and were removed by officers
• a woman was arrested for assaulting a police officer

It is further alleged that:

• demonstrators became confrontational with officers who were assisting with crowd control
• suspect #1 spat at an officer
• suspect #2 struck an officer

It is alleged that:

• demonstrators then attended TPS 51 Division at Parliament Street and Front Street East
• demonstrators proceeded to become combative and two suspects were arrested for assaulting officers

• suspect #3 spat on an officer

Suspect #1: man, 25-35 years old, with a medium build. He was wearing a Boston Bruins jersey, and a black Toronto Raptors hat

The Toronto Police Service is making the public aware of three arrests made in a Firearm investigation.

On Sunday, August 18, 2024, at approximately 4:20 p.m., police were conducting a traffic stop in the Dundas Street East and Sackville Street area.

It is alleged that:

• officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black Mercedes Benz, when the vehicle fled the area
• as the vehicle was fleeing from officers, it struck a TTC streetcar and another vehicle
• four suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot
• officers located two of the suspects and placed them under arrest
• officers from Emergency Task Force and Police Dog Services searched the area
• a third suspect was located and arrested

It is further alleged that:

• a Norinco Type 97 Assault Rifle was located inside the vehicle

The suspect sought is described as male, Black, wearing a grey sweater with a small white logo on the front left chest area, light grey/white sweatpants, white shoes and a black balaclava.

The Toronto Police Service is making the public aware of an ongoing taxi scam being committed in the South Etobicoke area of Toronto.

It is reported that:

• a vehicle resembling a taxi is parked in a high traffic area
• one suspect poses as the taxi driver and another poses as a customer
• the taxi driver refuses to take the other suspect's cash or the suspect claims their card is not working and they cannot pay the cab fare
• the unsuspecting victim offers to help by letting the suspect use their debit card to pay for the fare in exchange for cash
• the victim enters the PIN number for their debit card into a modified point of sale terminal
• the device records the card data and PIN number after the transaction is successful, the victim is given another bank card that resembles their own, and the victim accepts the cash from one suspect before leaving
• the suspects are now in possession of the victim's debit card and use the PIN to make a number of fraudulent purchases and/or withdrawals

The suspects have been known to use the following vehicles:

• blue Honda Civic
• blue Honda Accord
• silver Chevrolet Malibu
• black Honda Accord

The vehicle may or may not have a taxi sign affixed to the roof.

The Toronto Police Service would like to remind the public to be vigilant when using any type of public transport that results in debit or credit card transactions.

Some tips include:

• do not leave your debit or credit card unattended inside a point of sale terminal
• be aware of taxi numbers and company names when using their services
• be aware of the driver's identification that is displayed to the customer in clear view in the rear of the cab
• if there is an error code, or the debit machine is not functioning, always REMOVE your debit card before returning the machine for assistance
• do not make payments for an unknown person, using your personal card, in exchange for cash
• inspect your card after each transaction and ensure it is your card
• cover your fingers when entering your PIN

Anyone who has information, or believes they have been a victim of a taxi scam, is urged to contact police.

 The Toronto Police Service is making the public aware of an arrest made at a demonstration.

On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at approximately 6:45 p.m., a demonstration was occurring in the The Esplanade and Lower Sherbourne Street area.

It is alleged that:

• the accused attended the demonstration 
• during that demonstration, the accused twice assaulted a police officer
• on Thursday, August 1, 2024, the accused attended another demonstration in the Yonge Street and Dundas Street East area
• officers recognized the accused, and placed her under arrest

Niko Newell, 23, of Toronto, has been arrested and charged with:

1. two counts Assault Peace Officer

She is scheduled to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 11 a.m., in room 203.

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public's assistance locating a male wanted in a Theft investigation.

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, police responded to a call for a Theft in the Yonge Street and Wellesley Street East area.

It is alleged that:

• the victim and suspect met through a dating app
• the suspect stole the victim's credit and debit cards and used them to make several unauthorized purchases and ATM withdrawals

As a result of the investigation, police have identified the suspect as Kristopher Miller, 40, of Toronto. He is wanted for:

1. Theft of a Credit Card
2. three counts of Theft Under $5000
3. three counts of Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card

The suspect may also be using the names Kristopher Malko or Kristopher Hope.

Investigators believe there may be more victims. An image of the suspect has been released.

The Toronto Police Service is notifying the public of an arrest made in a Sexual Assault investigation.

It is alleged that:

• on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, a woman was walking her dog in the Seaton Street and Gerrard Street East area
• the accused began to follow the woman 
• the accused sexually assaulted the victim
• members of the public confronted the accused
• police attended and the accused was placed under arrest

Wesley Nyarko, 28, of Toronto has been charged with:

1. Sexual Assault
2. Breach of probation Order

He was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Wednesday July 31, 2024, at 10 a.m., in room 106.

Police believe there may be more victims. An image of the suspect has been released.

City of Toronto parking fines to increase on August 1 to support safer roads and reduce congestion 

On August 1, the City of Toronto will increase parking fines for 123 offences to help curb illegal parking, stopping and standing in designated areas. Increasing fines can help reduce congestion by discouraging drivers from parking and stopping their vehicles in high-traffic areas and encouraging people to consider other modes of transportation such as walking, cycling or public transit to promote a smoother flow of traffic.    

Some examples of the increased and new fines include: 
•    parking without paying at a parking meter (increase from $30 to $50). 
•    parking a prohibited vehicle on a bicycle path (increase from $60 to $200). 
•    non-electric vehicles or electric vehicles parked and not actively charging in an electric vehicle charging stall will be issued a $75 fine. 

The fine increases (https://www.toronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/9022-backgroundfile-245028.pdf) were approved by Toronto City Council in April following a comprehensive review by City staff that determined increasing parking violation fines would better align the City with fines that are set to an appropriate level based on the seriousness of an offence and could reduce and discourage illegal parking habits, aiming to keep the City moving and safe.  

The City does not communicate parking violations or penalties of any kind via text message. Residents are urged to treat such messages as fraudulent.

On Thursday, July 18, 2024, at approximately 5:47 p.m., police received a report of a collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian on Queen Street East and Sackville Street.

It is reported that:

• a 42 year-old woman was crossing Queen Street East near Sackville Street in a southbound direction at a pedestrian crosswalk
• a 70 year-old man was operating a 2017 Black Cadillac sedan travelling westbound on Queen Street East
• the pedestrian was struck by the Cadillac within the pedestrian crosswalk 
• the pedestrian was rushed to hospital but succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased

It is further reported that:

• the 42 year-old woman who succumbed to her injuries was pregnant at the time of the collision
• life saving measures were performed to deliver and save the infant
• on Friday, July 19, 2024, the infant succumbed to her injuries

The investigation is ongoing by members of Traffic Services.

Police are asking local residents, business and drivers, who may have security or dash camera footage of the area or incident, to contact investigators.

The Toronto Police Service Hold Up Squad is seeking help from the public identifying three suspects in a Retail Robbery and Firearm Discharge Investigation investigation.

On Wednesday, December 13, 2023, police responded to a call for a Robbery in the Yonge Street and Dundas Street East area.

It is alleged that:

• eight male suspects, travelling in two stolen vehicles, attended a jewellery store
• seven suspects entered the store wearing masks to conceal their identities
• one suspect produced a handgun and shot a glass door 
• several other suspects smashed the display cases with hammers
• one suspect hit the victim over the head with a handgun
• the suspects took a quantity of jewellery and fled the scene in the stolen vehicles
• the victim sustained minor injuries

Officers attended the scene and were able to stop one of the vehicles. After a short foot pursuit, four male suspects were arrested.

It is further alleged that:

• Upon arrest, property and other items of evidentiary value related to the investigation were located

Ali Taha, 20, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. Robbery with a Firearm
2. Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Endanger Life or Prevent Arrest
3. Disguise with Intent

He was scheduled to appear in court at Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at 10 a.m., in room 106.

A male youth, 17*, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. Robbery with a Firearm
2. Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Endanger Life or Prevent Arrest
3. Disguise with Intent

He was scheduled to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at 10 a.m., in room 606.

A male youth, 17*, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. Robbery with a Firearm
2. Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Endanger Life or Prevent Arrest
3. Disguise with Intent
4. Fail to Comply with Undertaking

He was scheduled to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at 10 a.m., in room 606.

A male youth, 16*, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. Robbery with a Firearm
2. Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Endanger Life or Prevent Arrest
3. Disguise with Intent
4. Fail to Comply - YCJA

He was scheduled to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at 10 a.m., in room 606.

Members of the Hold Up Squad commenced an investigation and were able to identify one outstanding suspect.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, a male youth, 16*, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. Robbery with a Firearm
2. Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Endanger Life or Prevent Arrest
3. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000

He was scheduled to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 10 a.m., in room 606.

Three suspects, who have yet to be identified, remain outstanding. 

• Suspect #1 is described as having black medium-length twisted hair and was wearing a grey hoodie.
• Suspect #2 is described as having a black moustache and chin hair, and was wearing a grey hoodie and black toque.
• Suspect #3 is described as having medium-length twisted hair and was wearing a grey Puma hoodie.

Images of the outstanding suspects have been released.
