The Toronto Police Service would like to warn the public about an ongoing scam involving fraudulent telephone communications, purportedly coming from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), police officers, and/or federal agents working for CBSA or Immigration Canada or a large utility company like Hydro One.

There have been several reports across the GTA of a telephone caller identifying themselves as a police officer, Canada Revenue Agent or a federal agent, and the residents will be arrested if they don’t pay the government for outstanding taxes or overdue bills.

Residents with call display/caller ID will see the name Canada Revenue Agency on their phone or a phone number associated with Toronto Police Service or the utility company. This is accomplished with spoof cards which can be easily purchased. Spoof cards are calling cards that let you pretend you are calling from any phone number you select, and that phone number is displayed on the receiving phone's caller ID.

Residents are led to believe these calls are legitimate due to the phone numbers displayed or the personal information the caller may have about the resident or a family member. These fraudulent phone calls instruct the recipients to wire-transfer money or purchase pre-paid credit cards.

If anyone does receive this type of fraudulent phone call, they are encouraged to take the following steps to protect themselves from fraud:

- Do not comply with the caller and contact the appropriate agency office to verify the information
- Contact them directly, with the number listed in the phone book
- Do not call the number provided by the caller
- Write down the number which appears on the call display or the number the caller provides
- Do not provide personal information over the telephone
- Restitution is awarded through the courts; police do not request or demand money
- Be cautious of who you are dealing with on the phone
- Do not provide PINs for bank cards to people you do not know
- Never wire-transfer money to someone unless you know them

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-3100, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637). Download the free Crime Stoppers Mobile App on iTunes, Google Play or Blackberry App World.

Walking Proud

Over 8,000 people marched in this year’s parade, amongst them, proudly representing the Toronto Police Service were Constable Christopher Atwood and his partner Joseph Barrett.
Constable Christopher Atwood and his partner Joseph Barrett walk together in the Pride Parade
“It’s a proud moment to be able to be in uniform and be able to walk with my partner down the street and in the parade,” said Atwood, with a smile.
Barrett said walking with Atwood in his uniform was an especially proud moment when a woman came up to them and said how happy she was to see an officer walk on the street in public with his boyfriend.
"I had a tear in my eye when she said that,” said Barrett, laughing. "She said that people in the community can hold their partners hands but it’s harder for officers.
“Even when I came out it wasn’t acceptable to walk with your partner in the Pride Parade so this is huge,” said Barrett.
For Atwood, it was great to see people from all walks of life come together to celebrate.
“It’s amazing to walk through the parade and see people from every culture walk together and cheer together and celebrate life together.”

Chief Mark Saunders walks in the Pride Parade
And while it was a raining, the weather didn’t stop Torontonians from attending. For Chief Mark Saunders, who was marching for the first time as Toronto's top cop, a little rain couldn’t dampen the mood.
"A bit of rain isn’t going to get anyone down, there are hundreds of thousands of people here and it is going to be a great parade,” said the Chief, as he joined his wife, fellow officers and civilians in the parade.
“This reminds me of why Toronto is such a great city, the fact that we have events like this and have so much fun and that we can all understand the importance of diversity and inclusion and how we all get along together so fantastically,” said the Chief.
Constable Danielle Bottineau was also marching in the parade with her partner.
She said this year around they got a lot of requests to kiss.
“We had three or four requests and it was really cute,” said Bottineau, with a laugh, adding that they did oblige.

“It always amazes me the response we get from the community, they open up and really cheer us along,” said Bottineau. “Having the Chief there and on board is great and he is one of our biggest allies, which was obvious today.”

PLAYGROUND: the film - Tuesday June 30, 2015

PLAYGROUND:  the film is a documentary to make people aware that whenever there is a big event in a large city, child sex trafficking increases to service people who will be coming to the city.  For instance:

In an interview with ABC news, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot said:

"When fans flock to the Dallas Cowboys' stadium on Super Bowl Sunday, few will be thinking about anything other than touchdowns and tailgates.

But nearby, in hotels, motels and on street corners, Texas authorities say a "dark side" will exist, one where children are sold for sex by pimps. And those sex traffickers are descending on the area.

People are thinking of the Packers and the Steelers and the game on the field, having a good time and Super Bowl commercials. Most don't think about a 12-year-old being forced to dance naked. The Super Bowl is a magnet for child sex traffickers."

With the PanAm Games coming to Toronto, this is going to happen and we should be aware and know the signs so that, if we are presented with an opportunity to make a difference in a child's life, we can.

After the film, there will be a discussion for those who wish to participate.  Someone will also be introducing information the RCMP is making available to the public.

Date: Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Documentary showing at 7:30 p.m. SHARP

Discussion afterwards

Location: McVeigh's, 124 Church Street, Toronto (Second Floor)

Toronto Public Health shares food safety tips for summer

As residents enjoy the summer season with outdoor barbecues and picnics, Toronto Public Health is reminding residents to keep food safety in mind when preparing meals. Following a few basic rules can go a long way in preventing food-borne illnesses and making sure your summer meals are safe and healthy. Simply remember these four easy steps: clean, separate, cook and chill.

"It's important that residents take the appropriate steps to ensure food safety is top of mind when preparing and transporting food outside during summer months," said Dr. David McKeown, Toronto's Medical Officer of Health. "Knowing how to safely handle, prepare and store poultry, meat and produce like fresh fruits and vegetables, will go a long way in preventing you from getting sick so that you can enjoy a safe and healthy summer."
Toronto Public Health has several fact sheets on its website that provide information on food safety: http://bit.ly/1sZf3tU.

They include tips on:
• how to properly wash your hands, utensils, food contact surfaces and foods
• how to avoid cross contamination of food
• how to cook poultry and ground meats, and
• how to store food when travelling or on a picnic.

Date: Friday, June 19
Time: 11 a.m. to noon
Location: Centre Island, Avenue of the Island (over the bridge, to the right).

In 2012, the original Toronto Island hedge maze was dismantled after being crowded out by a cluster of nearby trees. Meany donated $200,000 to provide the materials and equipment required to rebuild the maze. The original 1967 blueprints by the late Peter Vanderwerf, landscape designer, were used to guide the restoration.

Community Walkabout: Queens Quay Neighbourhood

From: Councillor Pam McConnell [mailto:councillor_mcconnell@toronto.ca]
Subject: Community Walkabout: Queens Quay Neighbourhood

Each year, I host a very popular walkabout with City Planning staff to explore our community. This year, we will be taking a look at Queens Quay.

Queens Quay is Toronto’s waterfront boulevard and is being transformed through careful planning and community consultation. The revitilization of the promenade in the west, the emerging neighbourhood in the East Bayfront, and new plans for landmarks such as the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal are part of a vision for a waterfront that is beautiful and accessible to all.

I hope that you will join me as we get an inside look at the changes taking place and plans for this important part of our city.

Date: Wednesday, June 17
Time: Meet at 6:15 PM, depart at 6:30 PM
Location: Southwest corner of The Esplanade and Lower Sherbourne Street

Look forward to seeing you there,

Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell
