TPS adjusts parking enforcement ahead of holidays and further lockdown measures

Broadcast time: 12:00 Date: Wednesday, December 23, 2020 Unit: Parking Enforcement Phone: 416-808-6600 Case #: N/A

The Toronto Police Service has been working closely with our City of Toronto and Emergency Management partners in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to support the various programs implemented by the City to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

In support of the provincial COVID-19 regulatory lockdown the Parking Enforcement Unit will be commencing an enforcement approach to on-street parking where a high level of discretion will be applied. This will be effective immediately.

Enforcement will focus on offences that create safety concerns, disrupt snow removal processes or cause significant disruptions in the flow of traffic on city streets.

We ask for the public’s cooperation in parking legally to ensure that the efficient flow of traffic in the City of Toronto is maintained.

These measures will remain in effect until further notice.

Should this approach be amended, updates will be provided through news releases and will be made available at www.torontopolice.on.ca/parking

Public Safety Alert, Protect Yourself During Online Shopping

Public Safety Alert,
Protect Yourself During Online Shopping

Broadcast time: 12:30 Date: Friday, November 27, 2020 Unit: Financial Crimes Phone: 416-808-7300 Case #: N/A

The holiday season is approaching and this year businesses are expecting an increase in online shopping. The Toronto Police Service would like to remind you to stay vigilant and provide you with the following information and best practices for a more secure online shopping experience this holiday season:

- always install antivirus updates for your devices as soon as updates are available,

- change your passwords for online shopping sites and other accounts regularly, using a different password for each system and account

- where possible, use two-factor authentication for an added layer of login security

- immediately change factory pre-set passwords on home networking equipment, such as Wi-Fi routers and smart devices

- for shopping online, credit cards are your most secure option; verify online transactions by checking your credit card and banking statements routinely and activate the alerts offered by your bank to receive email or text notifications for all account transactions

- do not use public Wi-Fi networks for online shopping or banking, even when a password in required

- phishing (luring using email) and smishing (luring via text message) are fraud schemes, which criminals use to elicit funds, obtain credit card data, personal information, or install malware on computers and electronic devices

- never respond to emails or text messages from unknown sources, and avoid opening attachments or clicking on links from senders you do not recognize

- reputable and established online businesses utilize encryption to protect personal identifiers and payment information transmitted to and from your computer or device, look for the lock icon next to a website address in your browser.

- always verify website addresses by manually typing them into your web browser, or access websites from internet searches

- when shopping from your phone, choose vetted apps from trusted businesses and download apps only from an authorized app store.

Remember, if the offer sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

Toronto Police Service Release Community Engagement Report, In the Communities’ Words: The Toronto Police Service’s Race-based Data Collection Strategy

Toronto Police Service Release Community Engagement Report, In the Communities’ Words: The Toronto Police Service’s Race-based Data Collection Strategy

Thursday, October 22, 2020 - 3:12 PM
Equity, Inclusion & Human Rights:  416-808-7100

On Thursday, October 22, 2020, the Toronto Police Service tabled its report In the Communities’ Words: the Toronto Police Service’s Race-based Data Collection Strategy with the Toronto Police Services Board.

This report provides an overview of the community engagement opportunities the Service has undertaken as it implements the collection of race-based and identity data. Over 69 opportunities took place between October 2019 and February 2020, involving almost 900 members from the city’s diverse communities.

"The community came forward with cautious optimism about this strategy and the Service’s overall efforts to address issues of anti-Black racism," said Deputy Chief of Police, Peter Yuen. "We committed to sharing their words back with them, and our plan for implementing their suggestions. We hope they will see their voices reflected in these pages."

The Toronto Police Service began collecting race and identity based data in January 2020, in line with the province’s Anti-Racism Act and the Toronto Police Service’s Board policy entitled: Race-Based Data Collection, Analysis and Public Reporting.

Community engagement efforts have continued with specific outreach to the city’s Indigenous communities and, starting November 2020, a second phase of engagement opportunities will launch as the Service looks to implement the self-identification phase of the strategy.

To read the report, or for more information about the strategy, visit the website at http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/race-based-data/

Back to School and Bicycle Safety Campaign, Tuesday, September 8 to Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Back to School and Bicycle Safety Campaign, Tuesday, September 8 to Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Tuesday, September 8, 2020 - 10:10 AM
Traffic Services:  416-808-1900

September means ‘Back to School’ for thousands of Toronto students and the Toronto Police Service will be out on our city’s roads reminding people about the importance of road safety.

While the return to school is usually the focus for September, the Service will also be promoting ‘Bike Month ’- an event regularly held in June – to raise awareness of cycling safety.

The joint ‘Back to School’ and ‘Bicycle Safety’ campaign was launched on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at Keelesdale Junior Public School, alongside the Mayor and other partners. The campaign will run until Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

By launching these campaigns together, the Service can focus traffic enforcement efforts and increase public awareness in a bid to improve the safety of school children, cyclists and all other road users.

With emphasis on enforcement, education and community engagement, officers will be looking out for drivers who speed, drive aggressively and drive distracted or impaired. Officers will also be in school zones targeting those who are parked illegally or vehicles potentially putting others at risk. Often, these behaviours lead to frustration, congestion and an unsafe environment for all road users.

The campaign also ties in with Toronto's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan which sees the Service, the City and other partners work together to achieve zero deaths on our roads. While the Service’s priority is educating people about their behaviours, current Vision Zero Enforcement Team officers will continue to take action where necessary and a permanent dedicated team will be out on our city’s streets later this fall.

A full announcement with specifics of the permanent team will be released closer to the time but members will be highly visible and strategically deployed throughout the city. The officers will conduct intelligence-led enforcement activities in locations determined by data from collisions, speed monitoring and more.

Year to date, the current team has issued more than 24,000 tickets for a variety of driving offences, while collisions that have caused life-threatening injuries have nearly halved compared to last year – 56 as of September 4, 2019 and 28 as of September 4, 2020.
