Traffic safety continues to be a priority for the Toronto Police Service. It won’t be long before the first major snowfall or cold snap of the season turns your daily ride to the office into a treacherous white-knuckle drive.

On Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at 7 a.m., the Toronto Police Service, in partnership with the Canadian Automobile Association South Central Ontario (CAASCO), will be at 207 New Toronto Street, for a winter-driving education event. The purpose of this event is to remind drivers to get ready for unpredictable weather conditions with a change in mindset and driving technique.

“Winter is approaching whether we like it or not. Road conditions can deteriorate rapidly. You need to plan ahead, adjust your speed and be prepared for a sudden change in traffic flows or road conditions. These simple changes to your driving behaviour could prevent a tragedy from occurring and get you home safely to your family,” said Superintendent Gord Jones, Traffic Services.

“The need to be aware and alert at all times, on any road, even in the most routine circumstances, is a key component to moving through traffic safely. Following these precautions can help reduce your chances of being involved in a collision while driving in any weather conditions, especially the winter,” said Constable Clinton Stibbe, Traffic Services.

“The winter weather can be hard on your vehicle. Take the time to make sure you and your car are winter-ready. Test your battery, check your brakes, replace worn windshield wipers and pack an emergency kit before the snow arrives,” said Teresa Di Felice, Director Government and Community Relations, CAA SCO.

Ride-alongs for the media, and media relations personnel from the involved road safety partners will be available for the duration of the event.

Remember to ensure your vehicle is mechanically ready for the winter. This would include tire condition, windshield wipers and washer-fluid level checks as well as a general inspection of the vehicle prior to the start of the winter season.

Keep the following safety items in your vehicle for emergency situations

• ice scraper and snow brush
• shovel
• windshield washer fluid
• booster cables
• flashlight and extra batteries
• blankets
• extra clothing and footwear
• first aid kit
• snacks
• smart phone and charger
