Fire safety awareness events planned for Toronto residents this week

Toronto Fire Services Safety Awareness Week starts today, June 8, with public events continuing to Saturday, June 13.

This year, Fire Services is again focusing on fire safety for highrise residents. Half of Toronto's residents live in highrise apartment/condominium buildings.

Safety Awareness Week is run by Fire Services' Fire Prevention and Public Education division to provide communities with effective education on fire safety. This week, Fire Services staff will go door-to-door distributing a brochure on highrise fire evacuation called Fire in Your Highrise and discussing fire safety with residents.

  

At each of the events at the apartment buildings listed below, Fire Services will offer free refreshments, an inflatable fire truck, tattoos, face painting, stickers, colouring books and junior fire fighter challenge activities to engage young visitors.

Councillor Justin Di Ciano (Ward 5 Etobicoke-Lakeshore) and Fire Chief Jim Sales will drop by during the activities at Islington Junior Middle School, 44 Cordova Ave., which is the first of the eight locations listed below. • Monday, June 8 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Islington Junior Middle School, 44 Cordova Ave. and Humberview Park, 30 Panorama Ct.

• Tuesday, June 9 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at 25 Cougar Ct., 10 Teesdale Pl.

• Wednesday, June 10 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Thorncliffe Park Public School, 80 Thorncliffe Park Dr. and Parkdale Junior and Senior Public School, 78 Seaforth Ave.            

• Thursday, June 11 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Shoreham Park at 25 Shoreham Ct. and Belmar Parkette, 70 Monclova Rd.

• Saturday, June 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Jamestown West Park, 370 Bleecker St.
