The Toronto Police Service is pleased to be hosting a graduation ceremony for 60 new police recruits on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at the Toronto Police College, 70 Birmingham Street, starting at noon.

In attendance for this special occasion will be Chief William Blair, Toronto Police Services Board Chair Dr. Alok Mukherjee, and Mr. David Gavsie, Associate Chair of the Ontario Civilian Police Commission.

The graduating class is representative of Toronto's diverse cultural community and brings a superior level of varied knowledge and abilities to the Service, including language skills, previous military or policing experience and post-secondary education.

The class is comprised of 33.3% visible minority members. Of the class, 81.7% successfully completed post-secondary education and 36.7% have previous military or policing experience. A total of 55% of the class speak a language other than English. These include American Sign Language, Arabic, Bosnian, Croatian, Danish, Farsi, French, German, Ilokano, Italian, Japanese, Macedonian, Malayalam, Norwegian, Pashtu, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Tamil, Ukrainian and Yugoslavian. Of the new recruits who speak a second language, 20% speak two or more languages other than English.
