Affordable Housing in Toronto

Affordable Housing provides the foundation for individuals to seek employment opportunities or raise families, and for communities in general to thrive. Since 2003, approximately $541.346 million in provincial funding (as of March 28, 2013) has been invested through a variety of programs.

 

1.The Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario (IAH) program, initiatives funded through IAH  include the Toronto Renovates Program, which will fund 319 housing improvements in 2014, and the Regent Park Revitalization, where $16.4 million in IAH funding was instrumental in providing new resident facilities, including the Regent Park Children and Youth Hub.

2.The 589 King Street East Project is comprised of three buildings that will provide a total of 243 affordable housing units catering to families and seniors. The $54.5 million dollar project is partially funded by Affordable Housing Program (AHP). For more information on AHP and all their projects, please visit: www.mah.gov.on.ca/Page126.aspx

3.The West Don Lands Development is part of the larger Toronto Waterfront Revitalization, and  includes the 2015 Pan American Games Athlete’s Village. The Athlete Village will be converted into a mixed housing project following the completion of the Games. For more information on this project, please visit: www.tchc.ca/westdonlands

4.The Railway Lands Project includes a significant affordable housing development. In total, 427 affordable-rental units and 40 affordable home ownership units will be created in Blocks 32 (Bathurst/Fort York) and 36 North (northwest corner of Canoe-landing Park, east of Fort York). The project was supported by $17.09 million of provincial DOOR (Delivering Opportunities to Ontario Renters) project funding. 5.The Social Housing Renovation and Retrofit Program (SHRRP)
was a two year program running from 2009-2010 that provided repairs and energy retrofits to existing social housing units in Ontario. Toronto received about $129 million in provincial funding. Overall, the program led to more than 80,000 unit repairs. More info here: www.mah.gov.on.ca/AssetFactory.aspx?did=6867

6. Additional programs and initiatives to deliver affordable housing:
The Government of Ontario has continued its commitment to Affordable Housing in the future. Among other things, this includes a major provincial contribution of $864 million to the THC Ten-Year Capital Financing Plan (which commenced in 2013, and will continue until 2022), which aims to address the significant repair backlog in Toronto’s Social Housing.

All constituents are invited to join the conversation and presentation of the latest detailed design of the waterfront trail at Ontario place.
