News from Queen's Park
Healthier Snacks and Meals on the Menu at More Toronto Schools: Eating a nutritious meal at school is crucial to a child’s development, health, and ability to concentrate better and learn more effectively. It is for those reasons that the government will be increasing funding to provide nutritious meals and snacks in more schools across the province. As part of the Healthy Kids Strategy, we are  investing an additional $3 million in Ontario’s Student Nutrition Program to create more than 200 new breakfast and morning meal programs for approximately 33,000 kids in higher-needs communities, including First Nations communities.

Mental Health Innovation Fund: Ontario is investing in more mental health support for post-secondary students with a new province-wide service that offers professional counselling, mental health information and connections to local resources. Good2Talk operates 24 Hours a day and is available 365 days a year. We are committed to helping the one in five young people in Ontario dealing with mental health issues find the support they need with our Mental Health and Addictions Strategy.

Strengthening Protection for Animals: We are strengthening protection for animals through regular inspections of zoos and aquariums, by boosting enforcement of animal welfare laws, cracking down on puppy and kitten mills, and enhancing standards of care for marine mammals. Working to protect animals from abuse and neglect is part of the government's plan to work together as One Ontario to address the unique needs of every community, so that we can build a successful, compassionate and united province.

Green Bonds - New Way to Fund Infrastructure: The government of Ontario is putting forward a new way to fund transit projects across the province, green bonds.  The province would develop and sell Green Bonds by capitalizing on Ontario’s ability to raise funds at low interest rates and serve as a tool for addressing critical infrastructure needs, creating jobs and strengthening our economy. In the coming months, the government will consult with investors in Canada and around the world on how to structure the Green Bonds to best meet the needs of both investors and the province. The province plans to issue Green Bonds next year, subject to the passage of legislation and the receipt of certification.

Wireless Services Agreements Act: By Spring 2014, wireless customers in Ontario will be protected against surprises when they enter into cell phone and wireless services contracts. This legislation would inform consumers of the annual cost of a fixed-term cell phone and wireless services agreement, require that contract be written in plain language, and that providers get customer consent before amending, renewing or extending a fixed-term contract.

Local Food Act passed: Ontario is now the first province in Canada to have legislation in place that will secure access to local food at home, in restaurants, at work, and in schools. The Local Food Act will help our agri-food sector expand to double its growth rate and create more than 120,000 new jobs by 2020. The new legislation will also create a non-refundable tax credit of 25 per cent for farmers who donate their surplus harvest to eligible community food programs such as food banks. The 2013 Ontario budget included $30M over three years as a local food fund, to support these goals. Food production in Ontario is a significant industry, contributing $34 billion to the economy and supporting over 700,000 jobs.

Stronger Protection for Ontario Consumers Act: Protecting Ontario consumers and ensuring a fair marketplace is the goal of Bill 55. Strengthening consumer rights and providing more protection against aggressive door to door sales tactics, debt settlement services, real estates transactions, and real estate fees and commissions. Seasons Greetings!
